Short answer: Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the practice of structuring your content so AI tools such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google’s AI Overviews cite your brand when they answer a question. It sits alongside SEO, not in place of it. You still need pages that rank. You also need pages an AI can quote in one clean passage.
GEO vs SEO: what is the difference?
| SEO | GEO | |
|---|---|---|
| Goal | Rank in the list of results | Get named and cited inside the answer |
| What wins | The page | The passage |
| Main signals | Links, relevance, technical health | Clear answers, a trusted author, mentions on other sites |
| How you measure | Rankings and clicks | Citations in AI answers, branded search |
You will also see the term answer engine optimization (AEO). In practice it describes the same work: making your content easy for a system to answer from. Do not spend time on the label. Spend it on the pages.
Why does GEO matter now?
Buyers have started asking an AI tool instead of scrolling ten links. One 2026 industry roundup estimates that around 28% of high-intent commercial queries now route through AI surfaces, and that Google’s AI Overviews appear on about 60% of US informational queries (LLMPulse, State of GEO). Treat those figures as directional. They come from a vendor study and every tool measures differently.
The direction is clear in search trends too. Interest in “generative engine optimization” has risen sharply over the past year in Google Trends, especially in the UK and the US. If your brand is missing from that answer box, you are missing from the shortlist.
What do AI tools actually cite?
They favor sources they can trust and quote quickly. In practice, that means pages that:
- Answer the question in the first two sentences, then explain.
- Use headings written as the real question a buyer would ask.
- Show who wrote the page, when it was updated, and why that person is credible.
- Carry structured data, so the company, the author and the service are unambiguous.
- Are mentioned on other trusted sites, not only your own.
None of this is exotic. It is good editorial discipline, applied consistently.
How do you optimize for GEO? Seven steps
1. Lead every page with the answer
Put a two to three sentence short answer directly under the headline. Write it so it still makes sense when lifted out of the page on its own.
Weak: “In today’s fast-moving digital landscape, many brands wonder about video.”
Strong: “A video editor costs less per hour as a retainer than as a one-off freelancer, because the editor learns your style once.”
The second one can be quoted. The first cannot.
2. Write headings as questions
“How much does it cost?” beats “Pricing considerations”. People prompt AI tools with questions, and so do search engines. Build your headings from the questions your sales calls already surface.
3. Use tables, lists and a real FAQ
Structured formats are easy to extract. A comparison table, a numbered process and a short FAQ give a model clean units to cite. Keep each FAQ answer to two or three sentences.
4. Make the author and date visible
Add a byline, a visible “last updated” date and one link to an authoritative source such as an official platform guide. Only change the date when you genuinely update the page. A faked date is easy to spot and does not help.
5. Add structured data that connects the dots
Mark up the page with FAQ and service schema, and link them to one organization entity. Add your LinkedIn and Instagram profiles as sameAs. This tells machines that the company on the page, the founder in the byline and the profiles on social media are the same entity.
6. Let the crawlers in
Check your robots.txt and confirm you are not blocking AI crawlers by accident. If your SEO plugin supports an llms.txt file, switch it on. It is a low-cost signal, not a magic switch, so do not expect it to carry weight on its own.
7. Earn mentions outside your own site
AI tools weigh what others say about you. Get listed in the directories your buyers trust, contribute to industry publications, and keep your company description consistent everywhere. Ten consistent mentions beat one polished About page.
This is the same checklist we use on our own pages at Creative Planet Studio: an answer first, question headings, a visible author and date, and linked schema.
How do you measure GEO?
There is no Search Console report for AI citations yet, so run a simple monthly test:
- Write 10 prompts a real buyer would type, such as “who should I hire to edit my YouTube videos”.
- Run each one in ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google’s AI mode.
- Log whether you are cited, mentioned or absent, and which competitors appear.
- Repeat every month and track the count.
Pair it with branded search volume and direct traffic. If citations rise and branded search follows, the work is landing.
Common GEO mistakes
- Treating it as a hack. No trick beats being the clearest and most credible source on a topic.
- Publishing thin AI-written pages. Generic copy is the easiest content for a model to ignore.
- Chasing every prompt. Pick the 10 to 20 questions that connect to revenue and own them.
- Dropping classic SEO. GEO builds on the same base: fast, crawlable, well-linked pages.
Frequently asked questions
What is generative engine optimization?
GEO is the practice of making your content easy for AI tools like ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews to find, trust and cite when they answer questions.
Is GEO the same as SEO?
No. SEO aims to rank your pages in a list of results. GEO aims to get your brand cited inside an AI-generated answer. They share a foundation, and good SEO helps GEO.
Does llms.txt work?
It is a low-cost signal that some AI tools may read, but there is no guarantee. Treat it as a small extra, not a strategy.
How long does GEO take to work?
Expect weeks to months. AI tools update at different speeds, so track citations monthly instead of daily.
Do I need to rewrite my whole site?
No. Start with your five highest-value pages and add the short answer, question headings, byline, date, FAQ and schema.
The bottom line
GEO rewards brands that explain things clearly and show who is behind the words. Start with your five most valuable pages, make the changes above, and test the results in 30 days.
If you want this built into your site as a system, see our SEO and organic growth work, or talk to the team. It pairs well with a content strategy that decides which questions are worth owning.
